Mod

1) Mod is a subculture that began in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and spread, in varying degrees, to other countries[1] and continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz,[2] although the subculture expanded to include women.
Significant elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music (including soul, ska, and R&B); and motor scooters (usually Lambretta or Vespa). The original mod scene was associated with amphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs.[3]
2) the mods showed no respect to authority when the police tried to retain them the mods tried to escape by hitting the police and smashing things up they also have a lack of respect in four appearing very arrogant.

1b) Essay ( Media Lang )

I will be analysing my music video that we filmed and edited for our main task which formed part of my Advanced Portfolio in Media - a promotional package for release of an album, including a Music Video. In class, we studied Media language and learned that it is the way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to the audience. One of the ways media language works is to convey meaning through signs and symbols suggested by the way a scene is set up and filmed.

My music video is a highly energetic hybrid of the Rap and Hip Hop genres using exciting background locations for extra audience interest. Our intention for the video is to show how the main artist Sempa has grown up in the streets that he is now re-visiting. We have used camera angles to show this by using numerous point of view shots so that the audience get more of a personal experience whilst watching the video. We also supported this intention by filming some tracking shots from behind to continue the narrative of following Sempa's steps through his childhood neighbourhood.  We used ariel shots filmed via a drone at the start and the end of the music video to show that sempa is going back to his old hometown and looking at it from a birds eye view, showing that he is reflecting on his old life. The order of narrative has been carefully thought out and by putting a similar drone shot at the start and end we have shown that as you grow you change but you will always be the same and you cant/shouldn't forget where you came from. Sempa has a lot more screen time as he is the main artist. Showing Sempa walking through his hometown shows that he is reflecting on all his experiences and memories that would've been made in the streets that he grew up in and we showed this reflection using editing cuts reflecting his thought beats.

Conventions of Rap

Strong editing cuts between concept and narrative (if the aim of the video is for the audience to try and distinguish between two different views)

male rap artists are commonly known to wear heavy chains or prominent rings

Show a clear display of emotions – if the tone of the song is angry, the artist is likely to present this through their gestures and facial expressions

Casual clothing, hoodies trainers and street/sports wear but more subtle and loose

Life’ of a certain individual or group

Rap music was one of the first genres to actually communicate with the American culture merging what was known to Americans with up beat sounds.

rap became known as a street art and the earlier songs were primarily boastful tales and negative thoughts about other rappers

Conventions of rap music video editing consist of lots of jumps shots of different environment or props included in the video for example, cars, jewellery, clothes, alcohol, drugs and women. There are also long shots that focus on the background and locations of where the artist is shooting the video. Also there are pan and ariel shots which can be used to represent their power and also give a view of the surroundings.  There are also close ups of key props that help emphasise the point that the artist is trying to get across, with the aid of their lyrics.
